Whittlesea Aboriginal Gathering Place

The Whittlesea Aboriginal Gathering Place sits on a horseshoe-shaped ridge within Quarry Hills Park. The site is a traditional meeting place of the Wurundjeri Willam patriline of the Wurundjeri Balug clan, part of the Woi-wurrung language group of the Kulin nation.

The design draws on the Indigenous storylines of Bunjil, Pallian and Waa, interpreted through the landscape, watercourses, terrain and sky. Feature colours and tones reference the site at different times of day, from dawn to dusk.

Timber and texture unify two pavilion buildings, linking indoor and outdoor spaces and guiding movement through the site. Outdoor yarning circles and welcoming circles extend this connection beyond the buildings.

A fluid veil facade evokes water while rock formations ground the building's base within the landscape, anchoring it to the earth.
